The Sabie River golf course, situated alongside Nelspruit and White River, is one of only four 18-hole golf courses in the beautiful Mpumalanga lowveld. Water is plentiful here and is present in the form of a hazard on all but four of the 18 holes. Best you bring along enough balls to deal with these water hazards!
The Sabie River golf course was originally a nine-hole course built by the local farming community for their personal use. Golf Data added a further nine in 1991 and also upgraded the existing holes.
The Kikuyu fairways, relatively hilly and very scenic, are well knitted throughout the year. The rough is short and the greens are well guarded by water hazards and sand bunkers. A number of large indigenous trees also need to be taken into account on this challenging but fun golf course. There are Bayview grass greens and five dams on the course, with silicon sand bunkers guarding most of the greens. The rough is short.
Water is a big feature here and is present in the form of a hazard on all but four of the 18 holes. The Sabi River comes into play, as well as a network of dams, big and small. This is game country and a couple of dozen hippos as well as crocodiles are permanent residents in the course's main dam next to the 14th and 15th holes.
The resort is a popular destination for golfers and is extremely popular in the mild winter and spring months, July to October. The idea a visit here is to play golf and also do some sightseeing and game viewing. A pair of binoculars placed in your golf bag with your 14 clubs, is a good idea as the birdlife is prolific on this course.
Sabi River's 125-meter 10th hole is a short, but nonetheless a rather spectacular par-three. Here the tee shot has to be hit over a dam, the edge of which is hard up against the green and which is reinforced with railways sleepers.
