The Gary Player Country Club golf course, which sets the standard for golf, has continually been ranked the best golf course in South Africa. It is arguably the most famous course in South Africa and has, since 1981, been host to the annual Nedbank Million Dollar Golf Tournament. This 18-hole golf course is regarded as both demanding and difficult, with some golfers claiming it to be the toughest course in the Southern Hemisphere.
The course is ranked itself amongst the longest courses in the world. It is a par-72, but the rating is 76. The par-four 8th hole is a tigerish 431 meters off the 'Gold' professional tees, but just 316 meters off the 'White' club markers.
Holes 3, 8 and 11 are all extremely punishing par-fours, with lon carries to narrow fairways, and thick bush is a constant threat if the golfer errs even slightly off line. The 422 meter par-four 18th is a dramatic closing hole where the approach must be hit over a wide expanse of water, but the golfer's favorite is the par-five 9th, with its island green. Depending on where the tees are, the Ernie Els's of this world may require anything from an eight-iron to a three-wood to get home in two. This is a hole for the true gambler!
The Gary Player Country Club golf course requires stamina and accuracy from players. Its comparatively flat nature is misleading - water hazards, cunningly sited bunkers and pins hidden away on kidney shaped green, make up for the lack of gradient.
The course is immaculate with generally pristine, wide kikuyu fairways and Bent grass greens. This course also cuts through the African bush leaving the fairways with only the bushveld as a border.
The Gary Player Country Club, situated in the Sun City Resort, surrounded by the imposing mountains of the Pilanesberg in the bushveld of South Africa's North West Province, is only a two hour drive from Johannesburg.
