The Fancourt Links Golf Course was officially opened in November 2000. Created from a previously flat piece of land, over 700 000 cubic meters of earth was moved in transforming it into a typical links. The course presents undulating windswept terrain, and dune-style landscape and is the only course of its kind in South Africa.
Gary Player, the course designer, has given detailed attention to each and every hole, ensuring that the overall balance in terms of length, position of hazards and shot values are in harmony. As a result, the links presents a stern test in all weather conditions. The Links has some extraordinary holes, like the par-three 2nd, with its bunker in the heart of the enormous green.
The Links at Fancourt is an awe-inspiring example of magnificent design and golf-course construction, about which designer Gary Player says: “Links golf is how the game originated and at The Links we take golfers back to the roots of golf – and they can play a ‘British Open’ all of their own!”. While being an exhilirating walking experience, the Fancourt Links Golf Course is quite possibly the most difficult course in South Africa. In designing the course, the legendary Gary Player gave every hole detailed attention to ensure that the overall balance in terms of length, position of hazards and shot values are in harmony.
With so many phenomenal holes, it is hard to choose just one, but the 14th on The Links stands out. It’s a short par-four that requires a drive past the fairway bunkers, followed by a pitch shot to a green framed by towering dunes.
The fairways and tees are a mix of four cool season grasses: Kentucky Blue, Rye, Fescue and Bent. The greens are a dominant Bent. These grasses allow for the traditional Pitch and Run shot to be played and also for the ball to 'chase' along the fairways.
"The Links has satisfied and far exceeded my design philosophy, which was to capture the essence of what makes great traditional links golf courses so special," Fancourt owner Hasso Plattner said. "I believe that The Links will provide golfers with the most natural golf experience, which to me, is what golf is all about."
The Fancourt Links played host to a very successful President's Cup in 2003 and has since become one of the most prestigious and popular golf courses in South Africa.
Situated in George, on the magnificent Garden Route next to the Fancourt Reserve, this course offers the golfer a unique golfing experience.
