The history of Golf in South Africa had its beginning on 14 November 1885, when a meeting was chaired by Lieutenant General Sir Henry Torrens, “for the purpose of introducing the game of golf” in South Africa. Thus the Cape Golf Club, the first in South Africa, was born.
In the last ten to fifteen years South Africa golf has experienced a revolution in the sense that many new courses have been built and even more have been extensively upgraded or remodeled. In the early 1980s South African touring golf professionals who campaigned overseas would return home, conscious of the fact that old-style courses in this country were simply not up to scratch when compared to tournament venues in America, Britain and Europe. Today it is widely accepted that many South Africa golf courses compare favorably with the best in the world. Bernhard Langer has ranked the Gary Player Country Club golf course – popularly known as Sun City, and venue for the annual Nedbank Million Dollar Golf Challenge, as one of the best in the world.
